laurelonwallWHO IS LAUREL GUY?

I live and work in Ithaca, New York.

My blog, One Perfect Day, will feature rotating exhibits of my new pastels in the gallery, as well as conversations about art, books, movies, ideas and the creative process. I’ll be talking with some of my favorite artists and writers about this question: “WHAT INSPIRES YOU?” Stay tuned!

I have been on the scenic tour: born in LA, grew up in Oklahoma and Kentucky, went to school in Texas and landed safely in Ithaca, New York in 1981.

Time stops when I’m painting. Every sensory nerve is concentrated, absorbing everything from sight to sound, from temperature to atmosphere, and then channeling those feelings from head to hand. As I work with the pastels, it is as though my fingers have eyes. They move quickly, transmitting energy and color, shaping a lasting impression of a part of nature onto paper. The painting that results captures the essence of one perfect day.

I think what I choose to paint, chooses me. Something catches my eye, something about the color, the reflection of light. In the same way, the finished painting calls to a viewer…makes you stop and look closer. First glance is not the end of truly seeing. It is my hope that the painting will tint your vision, adding a richness of color, light and energy to your world.
